Member Q&A

Updated July 2018

Following a decisive vote in favour at the AGM on 30th June 2018, the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists has now been renamed the College of Podiatry.  More than 85% of those who voted at the AGM did so in support of the proposal that the organisation be renamed.

Has the name legally changed?

Papers were filed with Companies House following the AGM decision and the change of company name is complete, so the organisation is now legally The College of Podiatry

What about our charitable activities?

Any activities that are charitable activities will come under a changed name of the College of Podiatry Trust, and this will be a name change only so we will retain our existing charity number.

What about the Trade Union?

We have applied for the change of name of the union, which has been agreed and is now being processed.  Our list number with the TUC will stay the same as 547T.

When will members see the name change being implemented?

We will be bringing in the name change and strapline across our materials and digital channels gradually over the coming months, and replacing materials as they run out, to keep costs to a minimum. Over the next few weeks we will be updating our headed paper, policies and contracts – and we will also look to update our website and social media feeds.

Is there a strapline?

Yes, we have a strap line to the title that will appear across member and external materials as appropriate. It will look like this:

The College of Podiatry

Representing chiropodists and podiatrists across the UK

What about our international members?

When it’s appropriate, we can use a modified version for international members

The College of Podiatry

Representing chiropodists and podiatrists internationally

If chiropody isn’t in the college part of the name does it mean we have lost our protected status?

Absolutely not. The protected title status comes from the HCPC which has confirmed it will not be affected by the name change, and this fact has been confirmed by our lawyers. In addition, chiropodists will be clearly visible in the strap line which is an essential part of the new name branding. We have been very clear with the HCPC that chiropodists remain firmly part of the membership of the College of Podiatry.

My business name includes Chiropodist/Chiropody – will I have to change it?

No – Chiropodist remains a protected title, and the name of your business will not be affected by our proposed name change.

Will we be changing the membership post nominal?

We are currently reviewing the current post nominal to assess whether it should also be updated to reflect the name change.  The outcome of the review will be published in the near future. We will phase in any changes required over a period of time so if you have printed business cards and signage these will remain valid post any name change.

My business name includes Chiropodist/Chiropody – will I have to change it?

No – Chiropodist remains a protected title, and the name of your business will not be affected by our proposed name change.

My practice branding and materials have the old ‘society’ name on them – do I have to change this now?

No. Branded materials such as headed paper, and business cards that contain the old Society name and logo can be replaced and replacing materials as they run out, to keep costs to a minimum. Practice branding will remain completely valid until you choose to change it.

I have just invested in Society branded workwear – will I have to pay to have the new name on my workwear?

No, if you have purchased Society branded work wear through Grahame Gardner recently (from 1st September 2017) you will be able to exchange this free of charge.

Is the name change an issue for the TUC?

No, the TUC have approved and are supportive of the change.
